Photoshop Tutorial 2.

After the first tutorial we had learnt various new things however we felt there was other stuff we could learn to make our projects a lot better. At first we learnt how to add a Motion Blur Filter to our work, it was very simple and quick to grasp, going to filter>blur>motion blur and then editing how many pixels it has gives it the effect the picture is moving, we then cleared away the blur of our artist with a mask by using the add layer mask icon at the bottom and then using the paint brush tool to wipe off the blur, my final composition came out as below.

Task 7 - Music Video Concept

Between my group we have decided that as our song we are creating a music video for is called "that boy is mine" we will have lots of shots of urban settings with traffic lights and busses and lots of pedestrians around, and then when it gets into the lyrics there will be two girls who are the artists known as "Contrast", They will be declaring all throughout the video that a certain boy who they are fighting over is theres, there will be different locations like, bedrooms, roads and clubs.

Task 3 - Technical Tutorials - Photoshop

Before & After

For the before photo we done a photoshoot using a sheet as a background and a desk lamp for lighting, with no budget at all we had to consider the positioning of the light as well as a fan we had if needed, for this photo we positioned the fan below my face and too my right, it gives one side of my face in shadow as well as one side in light i think this makes it look professional as it looked like we've considered shadows which we did.

For the photoshop tutorial we took photos which we thought would make good album covers then decided to edit them using photoshop, for mine i adjusted the contrast and variations to get it the shadowed effect, from the picture it had good use of lighting therefore i was able to show this through variations, i included my name to show that i knew how to put text on a picture could help in the future if i was to put the name of a song on an album cover.

i cut the part of the image i wanted out and then put it onto a fibred background which gives it the static tv look, all of this makes the picture look quite evil so i decided to add a little image of a devil onto my shoulder to make it look like i have an evil conscience.

In my opinion i feel as though the finished image would fit the album cover for a rock or metal band.

Task 2 - Roles within the group

Within our group we have roughly came to a decision on which member is going to do what

  • Gabrielle is going to be the director, she will give us the overall brief of what we will be doing on the different filming sessions, and producer.
  • Myself will be in charge of camera and will be in charge of looking after the storyboards.
  • We both will be casting actors/actresses to perform within our music video.

Task 1- Initial Ideas

As our group had a lot of different music taste we thought we would go for
a genre that we are all familiar with and that genre is UK Garage, at first
we was going to do a indie song (GO;AUDIO) but then we thought it would
be better of we widened the target audience to a less known genre, another song
to do is called 'i bring you flowers' and is well known by the garage fans, but had
never had a music video release so we thought it would be a challenge to create it one.
The final decision came to the song "Thay boy is mine" by brandy and monica, for this our
ideas was to have charlotte and gabrielle as the two artists who fancy the same guy (me)
and it will be a splitscreen music video.

- A variety of clothings

- Montage editing

- Cuts mainly on the beat

- A wide selection of camera shots

- Close ups to show the artists

- A Story with no meaning being shown.

- Video does not represent lyrics

Task 9 - Bordwell and Thompsons Theories of Editing

Task 8 - Conventions of a music video

The conventions of a music video are the elements in which are more commonly seen in music videos throughout different genres however the genre can make an impact on which conventions will be included in the video.
  • Close ups of vocalist and the band members playing instruments, this is to show to the audience that they are not fake and perform themselves.
  • Long shots of the band as a group or a single artist accompanied by dancers
  • The outfits fit the conventions of the genre such as tattoos and long hair for metal
  • High key lighting and low key lighting depending the genre to build the mood to help express the lyrics
  • lip syncing
  • cuts to the beat to make the video go smoother and not seem distorted.
  • There may be a narrative but the concept is more important.
  • The music video does not have to act out the lyrics however we as an audience are sometimes hinted or given a suggestion about what is happening.
  • three to four minutes long
  • Genre
